Five Significant Artistic Phases of Zhou Guozhen
(一)朦胧时期(1954——1959)
是现实生活题材的开创者是佛教雕塑题材的反叛者。
五十年代以儿童题材为主,1955年全国的“除四害”运动,造就了亿万中国人民迎接春天的到来;1958年塑造了在人民公社运动中老太太照看儿童的《好阿姨》形象;1960年创作了反映自然灾害的《东山在望》等。作品无不紧扣当时的现实生活,为景德镇的陶瓷雕塑注入了一股强有力的新鲜血液,所谓“朦胧时期”,是指虽然在题材上跨越了一大步,然而,在具有丰富材料的陶瓷装饰上还没有足够的重视和运用,陶瓷雕塑应有的语言特色还没有显示出来,对它还处于朦胧的认识时期。
The first phase: opaque phase (from 1954 to 1959)
A pioneer of subject matter based on real life; a rebel of sculptural subject matter based on Buddhism
The subject matter of the 1950s works is mainly about children. The national "Eliminating the Four Pests" movement in 1955 brings up the coming spring for all the Chinese people. The work Nice Aunt which was published in 1958 is about the image of an old lady looking after children for others in the people’s Commune Movement. The work Hope in Sight in 1960 shows the natural disasters at that time. All his works focused on the real life of that time and had input a stream of powerful fresh blood to the ceramic sculpture of Jingdezhen. This phase is called "opaque" because though it opens a new world in the subject matter based on real life, but doesn't pay enough attention to ceramic decoration which has vast variety of materials. The specific language of ceramic sculpture is not shown out and Zhou's knowledge about it is still opaque.
