周国桢,1931年生于湖南省安仁县一农村茅坑旁。儿童时期积极接受农家民间艺术。1948年从鸡窝里飞出来,入长沙华中高艺、1950年入苏州美专、1951年入中央美院雕塑系,毕业后已宣布留校,但却要求到基层去,到民间去,1954年8月来到景德镇部管陶瓷研究所,1966年3月调景德镇陶瓷学院任教至今。原为中国美协理事、中国工艺美术学会雕塑专业委员会顾问、中国美协江西分会副主席、江西雕塑协会会长,景德镇美协主席、名誉主席,首届(1988年)中国工艺美术大师评委、第2届中国陶瓷艺术大师评委、首届中国陶瓷设计艺术大师评委、景德镇陶瓷学院教授。
1980年应邀于上海美术馆举办个展、1986年由中国美协在中国美术馆主办“周国桢陶瓷艺术展览”、四川美协在四川美术馆主办“周国桢陶雕艺术展览”、1987年应邀于香港中华文化促进中心举办个展、1991年湖南陶玻公司等在湖南师大美术学院举办“周国桢陶雕艺术展”、应邀湖南安仁县举办个展等。于澳门新加坡及韩国等地联展多次。2011年11月又一次在中国美术馆举办由中国艺术研究院、中国美术家协会、景德镇陶瓷学院主办“周国桢现代陶艺回顾展”。 2013年由景德镇陶瓷学院主办在该院举行“一代名师·学术楷模周国桢从艺60周年作品展”。
故宫、中国美术馆、中国历史博物馆、中国工艺美术精品馆、香港艺术馆及海内外私人收藏其作品甚多;四川美术出版社、香港文化促进中心、中华儿女杂志社、景德镇百花广告公司等为其出版了专辑、2011年北京文化艺术出版社又为其出版《周国桢现代陶艺作品集》。
2001年由费孝通题字成立景德镇“周国桢陶艺馆”。2009年钱绍武题字由老家安仁县建“周国桢陶艺馆”,占地15亩2700个平方并在广场上建有大型陶艺十二生肖(最高3.2米一般2米左右)喷水池,因而上海大世界基尼斯总部授予《基尼斯之最》。
1959年国庆10周年,景德镇市政府授予“陶瓷美术家”称号,1988年轻工业部授予“全国轻工业科技先锋”称号,1991年被定为景德镇市拔尖人才,1992年荣获国务院特殊津贴,1993年英国剑桥世界名人中心授予“其世纪勋章”,2013年中国轻工业联合会、中国陶瓷工业协会授予“中国陶瓷艺术设计教育终身成就奖”;中国企业领袖与媒体领袖组委会授予“影响中国2013年度媒体关注的十大陶瓷艺术家品牌贡献榜”;瓷都晚报社授予“感动瓷都十大人物”,2014年世界华人企业家协会授予“中国陶瓷雕塑行业领军人物”,曾被英、美等国家名人中心列为“世界名人”。
他是我国当代著名陶艺家、画家,又是陶艺教育家,也是让一向陈列在室内的陶艺雕塑走向大环境的首创者,因而上海基尼斯总部授予“基尼斯之最”。被中外誉为“中国当代陶艺发展的一面旗帜”、“现代陶艺创作先锋”、“中国的毕加索世界周国桢”、 “中国现代陶艺第一代领军人物”、 “动物陶塑大家” 、“陶艺泰斗”和“一代宗师”。总之,周国桢先生既是中国现代陶艺史上的高峰,也是世界现代陶艺史上的巨擘。
A Brief Introduction to Zhou Guozhen
Zhou Guozhen was born in 1931 in a village of An’ren, Hunan. He began to learn folk arts from his childhood and studied successively in Changsha Central-China Advanced Arts School in 1948, Shuzhou College of Fine Arts in 1950, and Sculpture Department of Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in 1951. He was assigned to work at CAFA after graduation, but he volunteered to go down to gross-root unit and so he worked in a ceramic institute administered by the former Ministry of Light Industry in Jingdezhen since August, 1954. He transferred to Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute in March, 1966 and stayed there ever since. Titles he owned include: Council Member of Chinese Artist Association; Adviser of Sculpture Committee of China National Arts and Crafts Society; Vice-chairman of Chinese Artist Association, Jiangxi Branch; President of Jiangxi Sculpture Association; Chairman of Jingdezhen Fine Arts association and later Honorary Chairman;Judge for the selection of Master of Chinese Arts Crafts (1st session in 1988); Judge for the selection of Master of Chinese Ceramic Art (2rd session); Judge for the selection of Master of Chinese Ceramic Designing (1st session); Professor of Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute.
In 1980 Zhou Guozhen was invited to hold his personal exhibition at Shanghai Art Museum. In 1986, Zhou Guozhen’s Ceramic Art Exhibition was held by Chinese Artist Association at China National Museum of Fine Arts and Zhou Guozhen’s Ceramic Sculpture Exhibition by Sichuan Artist Association at Sichuan Museum of Fine Arts. In 1987 he was invited to hold personal exhibition at Hong Kong Chinese Culture Promotion Center. In 1991, Zhou Guozhen’s Ceramic Sculpture Exhibition was held by School of Fine Arts of Hunan Normal University at Hunan Porcelain & Glass Company and he was invited to hold several personal exhibitions in An’ren, Hunan, Macao, Singapore and South Korea. In November, 2011, a retrospective exhibition of Zhou Guozhen’s modern ceramics was held at China National Museum of Fine Arts again by Chinese National Academy of Arts, Chinese Artist Association and Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute. In 2013, “Prestigious Teacher Setting a Good Example for the Academics—Exhibition for Professor Zhou’s 60-year Pottery Art Career” was held by Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute.
His works are wildly collected by The Imperial Palace, China National Museum of Fine Arts, National Museum of Chinese History, China Museum of Masterworks of Arts and Crafts, Hongkong Museum of Arts and individual collectors home and abroad. Albums of his works were published by Sichuan Fine Arts Publishing House, Hong Kong Chinese Culture Promotion Center, Chinese’s Son and daughters Magazine, Jingdezhen Flowers Advertising Company and Beijing Culture and Arts Publishing House.
Zhou Guozhen Ceramic Art Museum which name inscribed by Fei Xiaotong was established in Jingdezhen in 2001. Zhou Guozhen Ceramic Art Museum which name inscribed by Qian Shaowu was founded in An’ren, Hunan in 2009. This museum covers 15 acres 2700 m2 and a grand fountain is built on the square with sculptures of 12 Chinese zodiac animals around among which the highest reaches 3.2 meters and the others about 2 meters in average. Those sculptures were granted Guinness Award by shanghai Great World Guinness.
In 1959, the 10th anniversary of The People’s Republic of China, Zhou Guozhen was conferred the title “Ceramic Artist” by Jingdezhen municipal government and in 1988 “National Pioneer of Science and Technology in Light Industry” by Ministry of Light Industry. In 1991, he was rated as Top-notch Talent of Jingdezhen. In 1992, he was entitled to receive special government allowances. In 1993, International Biographical Centre decorated him with Medal of Century. China National Light Industry Council and China Ceramic Industry Association jointly granted him “China Ceramic Art & Design Education Lifetime Achievement Award”. He was among 2013 China Top 10 Influential Ceramic Artists in Media appraised by China Business and Media Leaders Organizing Committee. Other honors include “10 Personage touching the heart of Jingdezhen” by Cedu Evening News, 2014 “Leader in China Ceramic Sculpture” by World Chinese Entrepreneur Association and “World-renowned Person” by biographical centers in Britain and U.S.A.
He is a ceramic artist, a painter and a ceramic art educator. He is also an initiator who brings ceramic sculpture from showroom to open environment. He was honored with “a banner of Chinese contemporary ceramic art”, “pioneer of modern ceramic art”, “Picasso of China, Zhou Guozhen of the world”, “leading personage of Chinese modern ceramic art”, “master of animal sculpture”, “leading authority of ceramic art” and “grand master”. In all, Mr. Zhou is the summit in Chinese modern ceramic art history, and also he is a towering figure in world modern ceramic history.
