Zebra:in 1988, material: saggar clay
size:34cm×43cm
"Zebra" is the author's first work in “neo-expressive” phase. Clay-strip forming is used so that a natural inner hollowness is formed, helpful for direct firing. This technique has changed the traditional sculpture forming method, bearing resemblance to the freehand brushwork of Chinese painting: the shape is formed at one stroke with no regret, leaving no room for modification. The modelling of animals depends not only on keen observation but more on the quality of mud and the skill of sculptor. Resemblance or non-resemblance leaves room for imagination.
